History Summary: -Korean History can be traced to the Neolithic Age as they were not two Koreas but one. The Neolithic Age is a period of time beginning in 9500 BC. It was considered the period of development of human technology. In this era Turkic Mongols migrated into Korea from China. Korea's earliest civilization, Choson, was founded in 2333 B.C by Tan-gun. -In the 17th century Korea was a state of China and was cut off from the world until the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895. The Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 was fought between the Qing Dynasty China and Meiji Japan over the control of Korea. 744px-China_Qing_Dynasty_Flag_1889.svg.png

(Click the picture to learn more about Meiji Japan)This period represents the first half of the Empire of JapanIn the end Korea was granted independence and by 1910 Korea was annexed by Japan. This developed the country but Korean nationalists still wanted independence. -After Japan was bombed, they surrounded and concluded World War II. Korea, controlled by Japan at the time, was split in two. The USSR took what is known as North Korea and the United States took what is known as South Korea.USSR.gif
(Click the Flag to learn more about the USSR) -The North launched a surprise attack on the South hoping to unite both Korea under one Communist government. The United States and Britain came to aid South Korea and soon a UN national command was set up to help South Korea. Communist China then came into war making the UN troops into a retreat. The two forces fought near the 38th parallel, the border between the two countries, for two years while the forces negotiated. They finally came to agree to just stop fighting. This was the Korean War. -In the late 1900s North Korea underwent a severe lack of food. In the 4 years before they had 2 years of horrible floods and then 2 years of extreme droughts all causing crop failure. This only left 10% of their rice fields workable. 2 to 3 million lives had been lost because of starvation. Some people started fleeing to China or South Korea and only few made it. Those captured were tortured or executed. In 1998, launched a test missile over japan, saying it was a scientific satellite, raises suspicion about their intentions with nuclear weapons. A year later North Korea agreed to allow the United States inspect a suspected nuclear development site but the United States had to help North Korea and their food problems. They helped by bringing potato production to the country. During this period tensions lowered between North and South Korea. -In the early 2000s North Korea confessed to many illegal and wrong doings. Including kidnapping Japanese training them for spies and violating an agreement that said they would not develop nuclear weapons. They also withdrew from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, NPT, kicking out the UN weapon inspectors.600px-Nuclear_symbol.svg-766665.png(Click the Nuke Symbol to learn about the NPT)North Korea reported that they had enough plutonium to build six nuclear bombs. They used this to threaten countries to aid them in their crises. They also demanded safety from any U.S attacks. For a long time it was a deadlock, both sides wanted something from the other but the other didn't want to give it away. In 2006, Korea launched seven missiles on America's Independence day that just fell into the ocean. It was a signal of defiance to the United States. Finally in 2007 North Korea gave in. They dismantled their nuclear facilities and allowed foreign inspectors to come into their country again. North Korea then shut down its weapons-making nuclear reactor. Later in the same year they announced they would shut down all Nuclear projects by the end of the year. They did not carry this out because they did not shut down all the nuclear projects.-In April of 2007 North Korea fired their old leader and gave the new leadership to Kim Yong-II. For the first time in 56 years trains passed through North and South Korea. Later that year the two leaders would meet together and agree on signing a treaty that would officially end the Korean War. North and South Korea are beginning to established closer ties.-In 2008 and 2009 North Korea and America again began to fight over Nuclear development in North Korea. In 2009, North Korea again launched what is said to be satellites when everyone else accused it of being nuclear tests. Even if North Korea handed over documents of certain Nuclear-related things, there are still some documents they did not hand over. Bill Clinton agreed to visit the North Korea leader to release to journalist who had been arrested for illegally entering the country. The journalists were investigating the North Korea involvements in Nuclear weapons.-Over the Thanksgiving weekend(2010) North Korea bombed a South Korean island named Yeonpyeong Island 50 miles off the coast.2010112300001011.jpg

1945-2010
Historical Enemies:-South Korea: North Korea and South Korea are bitter enemies. Their tensions started when the North Invaded the South trying to create one Korea again. This failed as Britian and the United States aided the South. Still North Korea small attack against the South along the borders. Today, though, they have tried to establish closer ties with eachother.-Japan: Korea was once a state of china and the Japanese wanted Korea's land and so the Chinese and the Japanese fought over it. In the end Japan got it but then gave it to the USSR. The two countries really didn't pay much attention to eachother until North Korea seemed to be terrorizing Japan. Their relations have plummeted ever since.-China: When North Korea won their independence they were annexed by Japan making them enemies. Today, though, they are allies and depend upon each other. Both are communist and they do lots of trading which supports their own countries.-United States of America: North Korea and America didn't primarily start developing a relationship until The Cold war. In the Korean war, a war consisted in the cold war time period, they were enemies because the United States were protecting South Korea from the North's invasion. They were considered Enemies because they were on opposite sides(The UN and Soviet Union) but this is when they actually got to fight each other in battle. In the recent years, though, the U.S has been suspicious of North Korea's nuclear development and North Korea wanting to become neutral with America. (Most noncommunist countries hate North Korea but these three countries are the major ones needed to know.) Historical Conflicts:North Korea's Main conflicts were The Korean War, The Cold War, And Nuclear Development.-The Korean war was when The North Invaded the South. The U.S and soon the UN helped the South in trying to kick on the north. China then came and aided North Korea making the war come to a stand still.korean-war4.gif
(Click picture for more information on Korean War.)-The Cold war is a war which the United States and the Soviet Union attacked each other indirectly because if they attacked each other directly they'd be launching nuclear missiles. They used words to threaten other countries and tried to make one another look foolish much like siblings. North Korea played apart of this war in the Korean war which is stated above.Cold-War-Flags.jpg(Click the picture for more information on the Cold War)-North Korea is Probably the center of the conflict in Nuclear Development because it had agreed many times to not do any nuclear development when it secretly has. It has even threaten to launch several missiles and launched some to show it's stand in the world.Iraq-And-North-Korea-And-The-Development-Of-Nuclear-Weapons.jpg(Click the picture for a Timeline consisting of Nuclear Development in North Korea.) The Cheogori or Chogori, spelt different for men and women, is apart of the Hanbok with is a traditional dress for women but are apart of the traditional clothes for men. The Cheogori on the men are larger and go to the waist or below. The paji were modified over time. They used to be thin for hunting and horseback riding but now, because of farming, are wider and baggier. A Hakch'angui is traditional clothing for Korean Scholars. the Ch'ima and Chogori are apart of the hanbok, as said earlier. the Ch'ima is is the skirt and the Chogori is the blouse. Traditional Food:
North Korea food is mostly not known to the outside world and underestimated because it is compared to South Korea's foods. Even though this is true, North Korean food is very popular around the world. They're best known for their cold noodles that are served year round. Their cold noodles also seperate the north food from the south food. Their most popular dish is Mul Naengmyeon(The Picture below.) It is made with sweet potato flour noodles served in a metal bowl in broth with cucumbers, thin slices of beef, and sometimes a hard boiled egg. More Traditional food comes from the sea. Seaweed is used in most North Korean food.
